Captions for YouTube Shorts

Put word-by-word captions on a Short and keep the picture you started with. Or take a caption file and leave the original untouched.

Add a video to start

One person talking, a few minutes, footage that does not already have music or jump cuts.

Finished edits

Finished edits whose creators allowed them to be shown will sit in this frame. Nothing here is your upload.

No example is on this page yet.

1

Drop a talking video

A raw clip or a cut. You watch your own picture while the words are written. The picture size, frame rate, and quality number stay on screen.

2

Fix a word if you need to

Click a word to hear that moment. Double-click to correct it. The line updates on the picture.

3

Save the video, or take the file

Save a new video at that same picture size, frame rate, and quality. Or take a caption file and leave the original untouched. Drop the file on a timeline in DaVinci Resolve, Premiere, or CapCut.

Same picture in. Same picture out.

The preview is your video, not a stand-in. The quality number from that file is on screen before you save. The video you get back is made to that number, and we show it again when the file is ready.

  • The picture stays on this device. The sound is sent to write the words, and it is not kept.
  • A caption file does not rewrite the original. SRT works in Resolve, Premiere, and CapCut. ASS keeps the styling you set here.
  • Words on the video stay in the frame if you crop it later. A caption file is a track you trim with the clip.
  • When the format allows, the sound is copied across, not recorded again.
  • If a file does not say its quality, we tell you and use a high setting instead of squeezing the picture.
  • The next video opens with the same look. Show one, two, or three words at a time, and drag them where you want.

Captions are free.

The caption file and a video with the words burned in are free. This device can send 40 minutes of audio a day. A pass already bought still works. The other prices here are what those tools charge.

CapCut Pro, published US list

$19.99/month

or $179.99 a year. Your account’s price can differ.

This is CapCut’s published US price in October 2026, for one person. The price on your account can differ. Auto captions on CapCut’s free plan run out, and the paid plan is a subscription. KineticCaptions does not charge this.

DaVinci Resolve Studio

$295

once, to generate subtitles inside Resolve

Free Resolve is $0, and you still need KineticCaptions to get the caption file. Free Resolve can put that file on the timeline. It cannot write one. Without the file you type every line and set every time by hand, until you pay $295 for Resolve Studio. $295 and $0 are Resolve’s prices, not a second charge here.

Questions

Is KineticCaptions a free caption generator?

Word-by-word captions are free. The caption file and a video with the words burned in are free. This device can send 40 minutes of audio a day. A pass already bought still works. New passes are not for sale.

Will this reduce the quality of my video?

A caption file does not touch the video. A video with the words on it is a new file at the same picture size, frame rate, and quality number we read from yours. That number is on screen before you save, and again when the file is ready. If the file does not include a quality number and we cannot work it out from the size and length, the new video uses 50 Mbps and we say so.

Can I use the captions in DaVinci Resolve, Premiere, or CapCut?

Yes. Take the caption file and drop it on the timeline. Free Resolve can import that file. It cannot create one. Without the file you type every line and set every time yourself, or you pay $295 for Resolve Studio.

Do you upload my video?

The picture stays on this device. The sound is sent to write the words, and it is not kept.

What if I want the words already on the video?

Save “Video with captions.” You get a new file with the words in the picture, at the same quality. Cropping that video later crops the words with it.

Can the transcript get a word wrong?

Yes. Click a word to hear that moment and double-click to fix it before you save or post.

How to use it

  1. Choose the video

A vertical talking video. The picture stays on this device. The sound is sent to write the words and is not kept.

  2. Check the words

Click a word to hear it. Double-click to correct it before you save.

  3. Keep the line clear of the buttons

Drag the words. YouTube Shorts puts controls over the picture, so the line belongs under the face and clear of that chrome.

  4. Save it

A caption file or a new video at the same picture size, frame rate, and quality. Both are free. This device can send 40 minutes of audio a day.
